Writing as Ritual: A Simple Creative Practice for the New Moon
There is a simple comfort to the steadiness and consistency of the moon cycles. I have loved using the cycles and seasons of the moon in my spiritual and creative rituals.
The New Moon is a perfect time to set intentions and plant seeds of growth. As the dark moon will only grow lighter in the coming weeks, it’s the perfect time to set intentions, manifest something you’ve been working on, and give your energy here to growth in general.
The following is a simple ritual you can use in your creative practice during a New Moon cycle when the energy is ripe for growing, manifesting, and planting seeds to nurture for future endeavors.
Because New Moons are wonderful for forward thinking and planting seeds for the future, this ritual is designed with that in mind.
Step 1. Set Aside The Time
This may seem like an obvious step, but rituals have more power if they have intention behind them. Pick a time you are free from distractions, can put your life on do not disturb for the duration of your ritual, and focus only on the task at hand. Be present.
Step 2. Gather Materials
I believe there is power in our ability to use our bodies in our creative work. Don’t get me wrong, I do a LOT of writing on my keyboard. But there is something important about being in your body when you write. And handwriting in a journal, notebook, or even a big yellow legal pad helps your creative brain light up. When you can take a thought from your brain and let it travel all the way down to your fingertips, then out on your blank page, that is a powerful but understated tool. Gather your favorite writing pen, a notebook or pieces of blank paper, and any other object that feels meaningful to you.
Sometimes I write with one of my favorite crystals next to me on my desk. Or I will light a candle before I begin and gently put it out (never blow!) when my writing session is over. No need to overthink this, just gather what is meaningful to you.
Step 3. Invite Abundance
New Moons are all about creating something that wasn’t there before, adding to your already full life, and manifesting dreams, ideas, and a life path. Before you begin, speak aloud a simple invocation of abundance, and invite this energy into your work. Speak whatever feels intuitive to you and your beliefs. It does not have to be perfect, or exact, or even the same supplication every time.
My own prayer of invitation may sound like this: “I would like to invite the energy of abundance, prosperity, joy, and creativity to be with me right now.” Simple, but meaningful to me. The important thing is that it resonates with you.
Step 4. Write Your Prompt
There are 12 New Moon Cycles in a year. So you can do this ritual as often as you feel called to do it. I am going to include some New Moon prompt ideas at the bottom of this article, but you can make your own based on what you want to build, grow, or nurture in your creative life.
Step 5. Write
After you have picked your prompt, invited abundance, and lit your candle, just let your hand flow. It’s important you don’t stop and judge what you’re writing during this ritual. You are opening your heart and mind and allowing the words to flow through you. If your words stop flowing, pick a simple mantra you can scribble again and again, like, “I am creative.”
Step 6. Close Ceremony with Gratitude
At the end of your ritual, give thanks to any guides or energy you felt with you, thank yourself for showing up in this space, and thank any future work that will come forward because of the work you are doing now.
Gratitude always enhances abundance.
Feel free to use any of the prompts I have included below or write your own that feels aligned with what you want to create or build.
Begin with: “I am planting the first seed of…”
Write about something you are ready to grow, even if it still feels small, invisible, or fragile.
Describe the life you are building as if it is a house.
What is the foundation made of? What rooms are still unfinished? What do you refuse to bring inside?
Write a letter from your future abundance to your present self.
What does it thank you for beginning? What does it ask you to trust before the evidence appears?
Make a list called: “What I am ready to receive.”
Include money, love, creative opportunities, support, ease, attention, pleasure, and anything else you usually talk yourself out of wanting.
Imagine your creativity as a garden under a dark new moon sky.
What needs watering? What needs pruning? What is ready to bloom next season?
Begin with: “The version of me who creates freely knows…”
Let this become a page about trust, discipline, devotion, desire, and the kind of creative life you are calling in.
Do you have a creative writing ritual you do? I would love to hear in the comments what you are doing in your creative space!
