Wednesday Writing Prompts

Each week, this blog will feature a creative writing prompt you can use to scribble in your writing journal, adapt for your work-in-progress, or even as a fast and furious brain dump in the comments. In honor of Spooky Season, enjoy this atmospheric prompt.

It’s a rainy and cold October evening. You turned down an offer from friends to go out. It wasn’t just the weather. Something was pulling you indoors. Being outside doesn’t feel safe tonight. You put on your favorite sweatshirt and pull a blanket over your lap, hoping the book you’re reading will distract you from the nagging feeling of danger lurking outside somehow. The thunder claps and lightning flashes every few minutes do nothing to calm your nerves.

You are skimming your book, trying to ignore the pit in your stomach when you hear a noise outside. You pause. Your heart starts to beat faster. You hear it again. What was that? You work up the courage to put down your book and look our the window.

You squint into the dark. The rain against the window makes it hard to see anything. Then the flash of lightening illuminates everything in front of you for a split second. You gasp, bring your hand to your mouth.

It can’t be.

Set a timer for ten minutes and finish this scene!
